Get ready for a green revolution at The Villages' oldest golf courses! 🌱 A bold decision has been made to upgrade the turf variety on the greens, and it's going to cost a pretty penny - $272,462 to be exact! But here's the catch: this change is all about enhancing the golf experience and ensuring the courses meet the high standards of championship play.
The Amenity Authority Committee (AAC) has approved the switch, with a 4-1 vote, to install a new turf variety called TifEagle on the greens of the Hilltop Executive Golf Course and the Silver Lake Executive Golf Course. These courses, located on the Historic Side, have undergone renovations in the past, but the turf choice is now being reconsidered.
The previous golf maintenance director opted for TifGrand Bermuda Turf, but the new Executive Golf Maintenance Director, Donald Jones, has a different vision. He believes TifEagle is the superior choice for golf course greens in Florida.
"TifEagle offers a finer texture, superior putting quality, and has proven its performance under intense management," Jones explained to the AAC.
TifGrand, while shade-tolerant, is better suited for fairways and lawns, not the demanding greens. TifEagle, on the other hand, is specifically bred for putting greens, offering an exceptional playing surface.
"TifEagle provides a tighter density and finer leaf blades, resulting in a fast, smooth, and consistent ball roll. It's the perfect choice for club players and tournament conditions," Jones added.
The new turf variety responds well to frequent maintenance practices like mowing, verticutting, and topdressing, ensuring the courses remain in top shape.
TifEagle has already gained popularity across Florida courses, including PGA West renovations, and now it's The Villages' turn to embrace this championship-quality turf.
But here's where it gets controversial: AAC Chair Donna Kempa cast the lone vote against the switch. She may have a different perspective on the matter.
