A tragic incident unfolded on a beach in Tenerife, where a British tourist lost his life after a swimming excursion. This heartbreaking event has raised concerns about safety at popular seaside locations.
The 75-year-old man was rescued by lifeguards at El Duque beach, located in the southern region of Costa Adeje, around noon yesterday. Despite the swift arrival of emergency responders, including a doctor and nurse from a nearby health facility, the man suffered a cardiac arrest and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. Sadly, he was declared dead at the scene.
Initially, reports inaccurately stated that the deceased was a 70-year-old foreigner; however, sources have now confirmed his identity as a British national who had recently celebrated his 75th birthday less than two weeks ago. El Duque beach is well-known for its urban setting and holds a Blue Flag designation, indicating its high environmental standards. It is important to note that this beach is notorious for its powerful sea currents, which can pose significant risks to swimmers.
At this point, it remains unclear whether the tourist was swimming alone or accompanied by family or friends. An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted today in Santa Cruz, the island's capital, to ascertain whether the cause of death was drowning or related to an underlying health issue.
A representative from the regional government’s emergency response coordination center stated, "The man died after being rescued at El Duque beach when he had gone into cardiac arrest. Lifeguards were the first to assist him before ambulance personnel, along with medical staff from a local health center, arrived and continued CPR, which ultimately did not succeed."
Local police are collaborating with the National Police to compile a report for an investigating court regarding the circumstances of this incident. It's worth mentioning that last year, Tenerife faced several tragic events related to severe weather conditions; four individuals lost their lives and three others were injured on December 7 after being swept into the ocean near natural pools at the Los Gigantes cliffs. Just a month earlier, similar incidents claimed three lives and left 15 injured due to high waves.
