A New Chapter in the Fight Against Polio: Rotary International's Michael McGovern Steps Up
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) is thrilled to announce a significant leadership change that will propel us further towards a polio-free world.
As of January 1, 2026, Michael (Mike) McGovern, a seasoned professional and passionate advocate for polio eradication, will take the helm as the new Chair of the Polio Oversight Board (POB). This transition marks the end of an era for Dr. Chris Elias, who has served as the POB Chair for five dedicated years, steering the GPEI through remarkable progress in the global fight against polio.
During his tenure, Dr. Elias oversaw the successful containment of an imported wild poliovirus outbreak in Malawi and Mozambique. Additionally, under his leadership, the program rolled out an impressive 2 billion doses of the novel oral polio vaccine type 2, a crucial step towards sustainably preventing outbreaks of type 2 variant poliovirus.
But here's where it gets controversial... While we celebrate the achievements under Dr. Elias' leadership, the real challenge lies ahead. With polio still circulating in a few pockets of the world, the fight is far from over. This is where Mike McGovern steps in, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted passion for polio eradication.
And this is the part most people miss... The story of polio eradication is not just about the medical breakthroughs and vaccine development. It's about the tireless efforts of individuals and organizations like Rotary International, who have been at the forefront of this global initiative since its inception in 1985.
Mike McGovern, a long-time Rotarian and a champion for polio eradication, is no stranger to the challenges and complexities of this fight. His journey with Rotary began in 1986 when he joined the Rotary Club of South Portland-Cape Elizabeth, Maine, USA. Since then, he has held numerous leadership positions within Rotary, including serving as a director and vice president of Rotary International, and as a trustee and vice chair of the Rotary Foundation.
But his commitment to public service extends beyond Rotary. McGovern has also dedicated his time and expertise to various other volunteer roles, such as serving as president of the Maine Municipal Association and the Maine Town and City Association, and chairing ecomaine, the state's largest recycler. He has even chaired the Rotary Action Group for Family Health and AIDS Prevention, demonstrating his holistic approach to global health initiatives.
McGovern's professional career has been equally impressive. He served the Town of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, USA, for over three decades, starting as an intern in 1977 and rising to the position of chief appointed officer (town manager) before his retirement in 2016. This experience provides him with a unique perspective on the intersection of public health and local governance, a crucial aspect of polio eradication efforts.
"It has been an honor to serve as Chair of the Polio Oversight Board. Together, we have achieved so much, and I am confident that under Mike McGovern's leadership, the GPEI will continue to make remarkable strides in protecting children from the devastating consequences of polio," said Dr. Chris Elias.
"I am humbled and excited to take on this role and build upon the incredible work of Dr. Elias and the GPEI partners. Together, we can make history and end polio once and for all," said Mike McGovern.
As we welcome Mike McGovern as the incoming POB Chair, we are reminded that the fight against polio is a collective effort. It requires the dedication and passion of individuals like McGovern, the strategic leadership of organizations like Rotary International, and the support of partners and communities worldwide. Only then can we truly achieve a polio-free world.
