Former St. John's General Manager Matt Abdelmassih has released a statement following his recent departure from the university's men's basketball team. In the statement, Abdelmassih reflects on his time at St. John's, expressing his pride in his work and the foundation he helped build. 'I'm a proud St. John's alum,' Abdelmassih begins, 'Coming back to Queens wasn’t just a job for me. This place is part of my DNA, and I approached the role with that responsibility front of mind every day.'
During his two-and-a-half years in the role, Abdelmassih operated with honesty and transparency, working within the parameters he was given. His clear goal was to put together a roster capable of returning St. John's to the top tier of college basketball. College sports, he notes, are in a complicated moment, and he took on that challenge with professionalism, care, and accountability.
Last season, the team had an extraordinary year, winning 31 games and capturing both the BIG EAST regular-season and tournament championships. 'I’m proud of that work and the foundation we were building,' Abdelmassih says.
However, 'Having my time end this way, and in a manner that doesn’t reflect my work or values, is deeply difficult for me, especially at a place that has meant so much personally and professionally.'
Despite the challenging circumstances, Abdelmassih leaves with his head held high, grateful for the support of players, coaches, staff, alumni, and fans who shared in the journey. He'll always root for St. John's and is now focused on his family and the next chapter of his career.
