Holmes knew both fighters intimately. He faced the young, ferocious Mike Tyson, experiencing firsthand the raw power that made 'Iron Mike' almost unbeatable at 21 years old. However, Holmes was past his prime when he fought Tyson, suffering a fourth-round defeat in 1988.
Tyson was a dominant force, having already defended his WBC world title four times after seizing it with a stunning two-round victory over Trevor Berbick in 1986. But just over two years after his win against Holmes, Tyson suffered a shocking loss to James 'Buster' Douglas.
But here's where it gets controversial... Holmes thinks that Tyson would have struggled against Foreman. Holmes believed that the Foreman of 1973, at his peak, would have been too much for Tyson. Foreman's power was on full display when he demolished Joe Frazier in the second round, before losing to Muhammad Ali in October 1974.
In an interview on Sky Sports’ Ringside show, Holmes didn't mince words. He stated, “George Foreman – two seconds. He hit too hard. You gotta box George, like [Muhammad] Ali did, like I would do. You can’t stand there with George Foreman and take punches. George will tear your head off. I mean, ‘Bang! Bang!’ It’s like the kitchen sink he’s hitting you with.”
A fight between Tyson and Foreman was rumored in the early 1990s, but it never happened. Tyson's surprising loss to James 'Buster' Douglas played a significant role in this missed opportunity.
