Consuming Fruit and a Cup of Coffee a Day Can Halve Risk of Unhealthy Cell Ageing, Study Suggests (2026)

Consuming fruit and a cup of coffee a day can halve risk of unhealthy cell ageing, research suggests. A new study reveals that diets rich in polyphenols—like berries, apples, coffee, cocoa, and tea—may lower telomere length, which acts as a protective cap against cellular damage. These foods offer antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, yet they also reduce the likelihood of shorter telomeres, linked to increased risks of age-related diseases. Researchers from the University of Navarra found that individuals who consumed the most polyphenol-rich foods had a 52% lower risk of telomere shortening compared to those with minimal intake. Moderate coffee consumption (up to one cup daily) reduced risk by 26%, while four to five servings of fruits per day lowered it further by 29%. However, polyphenol-rich foods such as olive oil, red wine, and vegetables were not observed as significantly impacting telomere length. Shorter telomeres are associated with higher rates of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and mortality. Isabella Kury Guzmán, the lead author, emphasized that these findings suggest a more holistic approach to cellular health: dietary choices over time, especially polyphenols, play a crucial role in supporting healthy ageing. Ana Rodriguez-Mateos, a professor at King’s College London, highlighted that polyphenols contribute to lower blood pressure and improved vascular and brain function as we age. While moderate plant-based diets are linked to longer telomeres, the difficulty in accurately measuring polyphenol intake underscores the complexity of these relationships. Gunter Kuhnle, a nutritionist at the University of Reading, warned that distinguishing between healthier aging due to polyphenols and overall diet quality remains challenging. This study reinforces growing evidence that diets rich in polyphenols may support cellular longevity and overall well-being.
