Arsenal FC Introduces Safe Standing: A Win for Mikel Arteta and Fans! (2026)

Arsenal FC’s latest major decision marks another win for Mikel Arteta

From the anthem “The Angel (North London Forever)” reverberating before kickoff to the tunnel setup that places players right in the buzz of the crowd, Arteta has consistently sought to squeeze every bit of home advantage out of Emirates matchdays.

Arteta will likely be pleased by the news that Arsenal will introduce safe standing from the start of next season.

The move follows lengthy discussions with the Arsenal Supporters' Trust (AST), which has championed safe standing for more than a decade.

“The process shouldn’t have dragged on, and some of the reasons Arsenal have cited against safe standing over the years have felt obstructive,” the AST said in a statement. “But we credit CEO Rich Garlick and his leadership team for recognizing how important this issue is to fans. Club and supporters can now move forward together.”

For the 2026-27 season, 6,850 seats—allocated to both home and away supporters—will be converted into a safe-standing area in the lower tier of the Clock End.

By the start of the 2027-28 campaign, the safe-standing measures will extend to the North Bank as well, bringing the Emirates’ safe-standing capacity to around 13,500 fans.

Importantly, this initiative will not change overall stadium capacity; existing seats are simply being transformed into rail-standing zones.

Arsenal have joined peers Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham in moving toward safe standing.

Following upgrades at Old Trafford completed in November—focused on the second tier of the Stretford End—Manchester United now has 13,577 rail seats.

United, Chelsea and Tottenham were among the clubs that participated in the early adopter program for safe standing during the latter half of the 2021-2022 season.

The government subsequently allowed Premier League and Championship clubs to introduce safe-standing areas from the following season.

Arsenal fans have long urged the club to emulate their top-flight rivals by installing rail seating.

In 2017, the AST conducted a survey in which 96 percent of respondents supported safe standing.

This season, Arsenal already trialed rail seating for a Chelsea match in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg, meeting the 10 percent supporter allocation requirement by installing rail seats for 4,000 fans in the Clock End’s upper tier.

This arrangement is viewed as a practical option for future cup ties, minimizing disruption to season-ticket holders in that section.
